The Festival of Learning (#FoL16) was a four-day celebration of learning and teaching in higher education in British Columbia held June 6 – 9, 2016 at the Delta Villa Hotel in Burnaby, BC. The Festival was conceived by members of the BC Teaching and Learning Council in an effort to create a significant collaborative initiative to showcase and celebrate learning in the province. By having the core teaching and learning support groups work together to share resources and expertise, rich and diverse professional learning opportunities were available for all institutions and organizations.
This event brought together a number of well-attended annual provincial events under the Festival banner including:
- British Columbia Teaching & Learning Council (BCTLC), Symposium on Scholarly Teaching & Learning
- Educational Technology Users Group (ETUG), ETUG Workshops
- Open Education, Open Textbook Summit
- British Columbia Teaching & Learning Network (BC-TLN), Spring Gathering
Faculty, instructors, professors, educational developers, educational technologists, leaders, and all who work in teaching and learning in BC higher education experienced a variety of opportunities to learn, laugh, create and collaborate with colleagues from across BC and beyond.
This event combined features of traditional conferences (e.g., workshops and sessions) with more engaged learning formats like intensives, studios, showcases, and a maker faire. The Festival schedule included workshops focused on specific themes, as well two social events and spaces for groups to connect and network. Participants joined for one, two, three or all four days and were able to create a custom schedule of integrated learning experiences. BCcampus generously supported the development of this event, along with many volunteers across the province.
