The University of the Fraser Valley‘s reputation for teaching excellence was recognized when Professor Awneet Sivia was named a West Coast Teaching Excellence Award winner, as one of the province’s top teaching professors. Dr. Sivia is an education specialist teaching in UFV’s Teacher Education Department.
Dr. Sivia teaches in both the Bachelor and Master of Education programs using “embedded pedagogy” in that she models good teaching practice as part of the hidden curriculum to provide academic, social, and cultural experiences outside of the formal dimensions of learning. She uses active learning techniques as well as problem-based, project-based and inquiry learning. Through “first touch” experiential learning, students come to their own assumptions and understandings of the curriculum then she encourages them to broaden their thinking by having them explore their ideas and understanding of a topic.
An educator with more than 30 years’ experience, Dr. Sivia was awarded UFV’s Teaching Excellence award in 2021.
“Dr. Sivia is an incredible role model for her students,” said Dr. James Mandigo, Provost and Vice President Academic. “She transforms the lives of her students but then shares her enthusiasm and expertise across campus and into the community. She truly represents what is best about UFV.”
The University of the Fraser Valley’s main campus is located in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Committed to engaging learners, transforming lives, and building community, UFV is a teaching-intensive university offering more than 100 programs to its 15,000 students.
